Instructions

Step 1. Preparation for Pro Floor Stain

Preparation for Wood Floors

  1. The floor must be sanded properly using NWFA specifications, finishing with a 120-grit screen.
  2. Water popping is optional and can slightly darken a floor. If you water pop, you may apply General Finishes Pro Floor Stain immediately because it is a water-based floor stain.

Step 2: How To Apply General Finishes Pro Floor Stain

General Finishes Pro Floor Stain Application Steps

  1. Always do a test panel to check the color of your entire finishing schedule before proceeding. Stain colors will look different depending on room lighting and the underlying surface. The color will also amplify with the application of topcoat.
  2. Record moisture meter readings in several places before applying stain or sealer on the raw floor. These readings will provide a benchmark at later stages to determine when the floor is dry enough to apply another coat of stain or proceed with the finish coats.
  3. Stir stain to reincorporate solids that have settled to the bottom of the can before and throughout the application process.
  4. If conditions are dry and warm, restrict the amount of airflow, increase the application rate, and block direct sunlight by closing shades or blinds.
  5. If desired, thin stain with 10-20% General Finishes Stain Glide Additive for Pro Floor Stain. Stain Glide will maximize flow and leveling, reduce lapmarks, and extend open time, which is helpful in hot, dry climates.
  6. If mixing colors, do so before adding Stain Glide.
  7. Apply 1 liberal coat of Pro Floor Stain
  8. Hand Application:
    • See Video Tutorial: How to Apply Water-Based Floor Stain.
    • Work in sections, applying Pro Floor Stain to an area about 2 feet wide, or whatever width is comfortable for you to reach over to wipe off.
    • NOTE: Do not walk on wet stain. The stained and wiped floor can be walked on carefully with socks or clean soft-soled shoes after drying 10-15 minutes under ideal conditions. This allows you to do entry areas first and work your way back to them to finish the floor.
    • NOTE: if any stain gets on the baseboards, simply wipe the stain off with a water-dampened rag.
    • Apply stain liberally with a paint pad applicator, T-bar or roller in the direction the grain. Keep to a board edge for best results.
    • Wipe off the excess in the direction of the wood grain with a flat, folded wiping rag. Use cotton terry cloth rags for best results; they are heavy duty and more absorbent than cotton materials, such as t-shirts.
    • Use a light touch to pick up the excess, not to remove the color. Use a clean rag on the last pass of removing excess stain.
    • Apply the next strip of Pro Floor Stain. Do not to overlap the wiped area by more than 2 to 4 inches. With the applicator, apply enough stain to the overlap to re-wet the edge of your first strip of Pro Floor Stain. Wipe from the wiped-dry side into the wet strip of stain. Do not wipe wet into wiped-dry because it can cause lap marks to show.
    • Repeat this process, strip by strip, until the room is complete. Apply additional stain to the floor from the previously buffed area.
  9. Machine Buffing Application:
    • See Video Tutorial: How To Buff Pro Stain
    • Use tape to mark off larger areas and work back to the tape line to prevent lap lines.
    • NOTE: The stained and buffed floor can be walked on carefully after drying 10 - 15 minutes under ideal conditions. This allows you to do entry areas first and work your way back to them to finish the floor.
    • Apply Pro Floor Stain in 1-2 foot strip along the edge of the STARTING WALL with a roller or paint pad and wipe off the excess, leaving a wet edge. Complete the starting wall and stop 2 feet short of the butt ends.
    • Apply Pro Floor Stain to a second strip parallel to the stained section along the starting wall. Feather out the edges to prevent a hard line, but leave a wet edge of stain on the floor.
    • Using a thick white pad, buff the stain, spreading it out and blending the new strip with the previously stained area. Add stain to light areas and continue to buff until the stain is uniform and even.
    • Apply stain to the butt ends with a paint pad or roller, wiping off the excess with absorbent terry cloth rags and blend in with the buffed field area.
    • Using a thick white pad, buff the stain, spreading it out and blending the new strip with the previously stained area. Blend with the edges.
    • Working along the room one section at a time, continue to add strips of stain to the field area in the direction of the grain and then buff to blend in. Finish each section by staining and wiping the butt area.
    • To finish the room, cut in the stain along the FINISHING WALL with a paint pad or roller, hand wipe the section to remove excess stain and buff until the stain is uniform and even.
    • Change the white pad as necessary to prevent build up and stain grab. Approximately 200-300 square feet to pad side.
  10. Removing grain raise
    • Let the buffed stain dry approximately 20-30 minutes, depending on the humidity levels in the room. Then, if desired, buff the surface with a thick red pad to burnish off raised wood fibers.
    • NOTE: if any stain gets on the baseboards, simply wipe the stain off with a water-dampened rag.
  11. Dry 4+ hours in ideal conditions: 70*F/20*C; 50% humidity.
  12. Measure the moisture content of the floor with a moisture meter to verify the floor has returned to original readings before applying General Finishes Pro Sealer Flooring Topcoat.

Cleanup of Water Based Products

Application tools and materials containing water-based products can be cleaned with soap and water immediately after use.

Product Spills
Spills may be able to be removed from fabric and carpet if cleaned immediately with soap and water.

Storage of Pro Flooring Products

Life of Product
Water-based products do not last forever, even when unopened. General Finishes products are best used within 1 year of the manufacture date listed on the container. The life of the product may be extended with proper care and storage.

Storage Tips
The following best practices will increase the life of your product:

  1. Keep the containers closed after decanting what you need.
  2. Store in moderate temperatures. Avoid temperatures below 50*F/10*C or above 80*F/26*C. Frozen and heat-damaged product cannot be revitalized. Temperature-controlled spaces, such as a basement, are ideal for storage. Do not store product in an attic, garage, in direct sunlight, or next to something warm like a water heater or furnace.
  3. Decant leftovers to a smaller container when the finish is almost used up. Alternative storage containers for water-based products are plastic FIFO bottles or glass bottles. Do not fill metal-lidded containers completely to prevent them from rusting.

The following water-based product mixtures can be stored:

The following product mixtures should NOT be stored:

  • Any water-based product thinned with tap water. Water often contains bacteria that will adversely affect stored paint.
