Surface Preparation:
- Sand open-grained woods with #120 sandpaper, followed by #150, and finish with #180. Sand close-grained woods with #150 sandpaper followed by #220.
- Remove dust before applying stain.
Combine TransTint® with any of the following Clear Bases:
- General Finishes Dye Stain Reducer
- General Finishes Water-Based Pre-Stain Conditioner
- Denatured alcohol
- Acetone
- Water
Mixing Proportions:
- A suggested starting point is 1 oz. TransTint to 1 Quart (32 oz.) Clear Base. Note: 1 oz. = 2 tablespoons
- Ratios may be adjusted to achieve the desired color. However, we do not recommend exceeding 3 oz. TransTint® per Quart (32 oz.) of Clear Base.
- Mix thoroughly.
Apply Stain by Hand Application:
- Apply a wet, even coat with a bristle brush, foam brush, or paint pad applicator.
- Allow to penetrate for 1 to 2 minutes.
- Wipe off excess with the grain using a clean cloth. Note, Terry cloth towels work the best.
Apply Stain by Spray & Wipe Application:
- Spray on a wet, even coat. A .8mm to 1.0mm tip is recommended.
- Allow to penetrate for 1 to 2 minutes.
- Wipe off excess with the grain using a clean cloth. Note, Terry cloth towels work the best.
Apply Stain by Spray-No-Wipe Application:
- Set up your gun for a fine, even mist and use low fluid flow and medium air pressure to avoid saturating the surface.
- Using smooth, overlapping passes, apply a thin, uniform layer that colors the wood without creating wet spots.
- Let each pass flash off for a few seconds and continue layering until the desired depth of color is achieved.
Dry Time:
- If using water, denatured alcohol, or acetone as a base, allow to dry for 20 minutes before applying topcoat.
- If using GF Dye Stain Reducer or GF Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner as a base, allow 2 hours dry time in ideal conditions (70°F, 21°C; 50% humidity) before applying topcoat. Cooler temperatures and higher humidity will prolong dry times.
Seal with Topcoat:
- After the stain dries, apply any GF topcoats to lock in stain color and protect your project from wear and tear.
- Also, solvent-based finishes, shellac, and lacquer can be used.
