TransTint® Liquid Dye Concentrate

When precision, consistency, and depth of color matter most, professionals turn to TransTint®.

TransTint® dyes are premium, concentrated liquid colorants engineered to blend seamlessly with a wide variety of bases, giving woodworkers unmatched flexibility when creating stains and toners. This concentrate pours and mixes like a low-viscosity liquid, designed to blend easily into water, alcohol, lacquer, and clear finishes. Designed for exceptional grain clarity and rich, even color saturation, TransTint® delivers a depth and brilliance that traditional wood stains simply cannot match.

Unlike standard stains, TransTint® dyes penetrate deeply, amplify natural grain patterns, and offer an expansive palette of vibrant hues that professionals rely on for everything from fine furniture and cabinetry to musical or precision crafted instruments and restoration work.

Whether you are creating a bold custom stain or adding subtle color between finish coats, TransTint® gives you the control, versatility, and depth needed to bring your project to life.

TransTint Bottles - General Finishes

Instructions

How to Apply TransTint® as a Stain

Surface Preparation:

  1. Sand open-grained woods with #120 sandpaper, followed by #150, and finish with #180. Sand close-grained woods with #150 sandpaper followed by #220.
  2. Remove dust before applying stain.

Combine TransTint® with any of the following Clear Bases:

  1. General Finishes Dye Stain Reducer
  2. General Finishes Water-Based Pre-Stain Conditioner
  3. Denatured alcohol
  4. Acetone
  5. Water

Mixing Proportions:

  1. A suggested starting point is 1 oz. TransTint to 1 Quart (32 oz.) Clear Base. Note: 1 oz. = 2 tablespoons
  2. Ratios may be adjusted to achieve the desired color. However, we do not recommend exceeding 3 oz. TransTint® per Quart (32 oz.) of Clear Base.
  3. Mix thoroughly.

Apply Stain by Hand Application:

  1. Apply a wet, even coat with a bristle brush, foam brush, or paint pad applicator.
  2. Allow to penetrate for 1 to 2 minutes.
  3. Wipe off excess with the grain using a clean cloth. Note, Terry cloth towels work the best.

Apply Stain by Spray & Wipe Application:

  1. Spray on a wet, even coat. A .8mm to 1.0mm tip is recommended.
  2. Allow to penetrate for 1 to 2 minutes.
  3. Wipe off excess with the grain using a clean cloth. Note, Terry cloth towels work the best.

Apply Stain by Spray-No-Wipe Application:

  1. Set up your gun for a fine, even mist and use low fluid flow and medium air pressure to avoid saturating the surface.
  2. Using smooth, overlapping passes, apply a thin, uniform layer that colors the wood without creating wet spots.
  3. Let each pass flash off for a few seconds and continue layering until the desired depth of color is achieved.

Dry Time:

  • If using water, denatured alcohol, or acetone as a base, allow to dry for 20 minutes before applying topcoat.
  • If using GF Dye Stain Reducer or GF Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner as a base, allow 2 hours dry time in ideal conditions (70°F, 21°C; 50% humidity) before applying topcoat. Cooler temperatures and higher humidity will prolong dry times.

Seal with Topcoat:

  1. After the stain dries, apply any GF topcoats to lock in stain color and protect your project from wear and tear.
  2. Also, solvent-based finishes, shellac, and lacquer can be used.

How to Apply TransTint® as a Toner

Toning refers to a transparent colored finish that's applied to adjust or even out the color without completely obscuring the grain. For best results, spray application is recommended. However, Toners can also be applied by brush.

Combine TransTint with any of the following:

  1. General Finishes High Performance Topcoat
  2. All General Finishes Enduro Topcoats
  3. Solvent-based finishes, shellac and lacquer

Mixing Proportions:

  1. Mix up to 1 oz. TransTint to 1 Quart (32 oz.) Clear Base. Note: 1 oz. = 2 tablespoons.
  2. Ratios may be adjusted to achieve the desired color. However, we do not recommend exceeding 3 oz. TransTint per Quart (32 oz.) Clear Base.
  3. Mix thoroughly.
  4. Note: A Toner can be applied to raw wood, stained wood, or a sealed surface.

Spraying a Toner:

  1. Set up your gun as if you're applying a topcoat. Using smooth, overlapping passes, apply a thin, uniform layer that colors the wood without creating wet spots. A 1.0 mm to 1.3mm tip is recommended.
  2. Let each pass flash off for a few seconds and continue layering until the desired depth of color is achieved.
  3. Important: It's always better to apply more thin coats than fewer heavy coats.
  4. Let toner dry thoroughly.
  5. Dry Times: Follow the manufacturer's guidelines for the product you're using as a toner base.

Seal with Topcoat

  1. After the toner has dried, it's recommended to apply a clear coat of the product you're using as a toner base or one that is compatible.

Create Custom Colors

  • All TransTint Dyes may be intermixed to create custom colors.
  • TransTint Dyes can also be mixed with General Finishes Water-Based Wood Stains and Dye Stains.

Always Test First

Always test before use. Every wood species absorbs color differently, and your dilution ratios, application method, and chosen finish will all influence the final appearance.
